“Absolutely still a hope,” Gimple said in a recent interview with Brandon Davis. He acknowledged the practical hurdles blocking any immediate crossover. “It’s very challenging for a variety of reasons, which have everything to do with 2026 production. But things change very quickly.”

Gimple did not limit his vision to just Rick and Daryl. The broader universe holds space for heavyweights like Morgan and Negan, though logistical nightmares persist. The standalone Daryl Dixon series is wrapping its run later this year, and Norman Reedus himself penned what reads like a definitive farewell to the character.

The timeline presents another obstacle. The Walking Dead boss fueled that speculation carefully. He has drafted multiple contingency plans, describing them as “all sorts of garden-of-forking-paths kind of plans.” His timeline remains vague. “It might be a minute. It might be tomorrow. I might be off at the retirement home,” he said. Despite the uncertainty, his conviction stays firm. “I think we’ll eventually get there, and I think there’s enough stuff to handle, source material, emotional, plot-wise, everything, that we could do something brilliant.”

However, for now, a different kind of reunion is releasing sooner. The upcoming video game The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival will feature Rick, Michonne, and Daryl as playable characters in a beat-’em-up adaptation of the All-Out War arc. It is the first time this trio has been bundled together in over 12 years, even if the game’s narrative may not place them in the same scene simultaneously.
