The New York Giants are set to thrust their rookie signal-caller into the spotlight.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart will draw the start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers after the Giants opted to bench Russell Wilson, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.
Dart, 22, was selected by the Giants 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. He has yet to attempt a pass in the regular season as the G-Men have rolled with the veteran Wilson for the first three games of the season.
The Kaysville, Utah, native did well under centre in the pre-season, completing 32 of his 47 pass attempts for 372 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He finished with a 113.1 passer rating and added 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Dart threw for an SEC-leading 4,279 yards with a 69.3 completion percentage, 29 touchdowns and six interceptions in his senior season with the Rebels.
The decision to bench Wilson comes after the 36-year-old struggled to the tune of 18 completions on 32 attempts with 160 yards passing and two interceptions in a 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
On Monday, head coach Brian Daboll told reporters, “We’re evaluating everything” when it comes to his team’s QBs going forward.
Wilson had an incredible Week 2 performance in a tight loss to the Dallas Cowboys, throwing for 450 yards on 30 of 41 pass attempts while adding three touchdowns and an interception.
The former Super Bowl champ is expected to serve as the team’s backup against the Chargers, with fellow veteran Jameis Winston as the third-string QB.
The Giants are currently 0-3 and sit last in the NFC East with a -31 point differential.
