PS5 Players Surprised With Free Upgrade of the Most Popular PS4 Game

PS5 players got a nice surprise today in the form of a free upgrade. One of the most popular games of the last console generation will now be free to upgrade for previous owners.

Rockstar offers all GTA V PS4 disc and digital game owners free PS5 upgrade in rare move

In a surprise announcement, Rockstar announced that anyone who owns Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, either physically or digitally, will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version of the game for free beginning tomorrow. This allows players to experience the game on a new console if they haven’t yet and take part in the newest version of GTA Online, which is also getting a big update.

For those who haven’t yet upgraded, Rockstar allows players to migrate all of their data, including story mode and online progress, to new consoles. Fans looking to upgrade should be on the lookout for the game’s upgraded version on the PS Store.

Originally released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s seventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the last entry in the series to date. The game took place in the fictional state of San Andreas, and featured three protagonists, all of whom’s story intersects with each other throughout the game. Much like many of Rockstar’s games, GTA V was met with massive acclaim and is the second-best-selling video of all time. It still has a dedicated player base in the form of GTA Online.

A sixth Grand Theft Auto has been in development for some time now and is finally set to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
