Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s warm-hearted astronaut dramedy “Project Hail Mary,” which follows Ryan Gosling interacting with a rock-like alien, has premiered above projections with a domestic opening weekend estimate of over $77 million.

The film pulled in $12 million in previews on Thursday night followed by a further $21.1 million on Friday – buoyed by excellent critical reviews and an ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences.

It joins the elite crowd of only two other non-sequel, non-franchise films that have had domestic opening weekends above $70 million in the past decade – Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Jordan Peele’s “Us”.

The film also helped lift up the rest of the box-office which is charting 91% ahead of where it was this time last year.

Also hitting this weekend was Radio Silence’s horror-comedy “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” which is coming in a little under expectations – the title heading for a $9 million opening weekend which is just a tad above the $8 million debut of the opening.

That will put it in fourth place, behind the new Indian action-thriller “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” starring Ranveer Singh which is headed for a $10.5 million third place opening.

Disney’s “Hoppers” is holding onto second place with $20.5 million. Rounding out the top five are “Reminders of Him” which is scoring a further $8.7 million and has dropped 52% in its second weekend.
