Audiences watching Project Hail Mary may find themselves doing a double-take when a familiar voice suddenly can be heard from an alien communication device.

The moment comes as Ryland Grady, played by Ryan Gosling, cycles through computerized voice options while trying to establish a way to communicate with Rocky, an alien from the planet Erid. Among the robotic voices, one stands out unmistakably.

Andy Weir explains Meryl Streep’s cameo in Project Hail Mary

Andy Weir, the author of the book that inspired the film, spoke with Forbes about the unexpected addition. According to Weir, the idea came up organically on set. Gosling ad-libbed the line, “Ah, Meryl Streep, she can do anything.” From there, the creative team decided to pursue the idea.

However, they agreed on one crucial condition: they would only use Streep’s voice if it was authentically hers, not an artificial intelligence recreation. They reached out to the acclaimed actress, and she quickly agreed to record a single line for Project Hail Mary. As Weir told Forbes, “I love how it ended up being Meryl Streep pretending to be a computer that is pretending to be Meryl Streep.”

Project Hail Mary, based on Weir’s 2021 novel, follows Ryland Grace. It follows Ryland as he awakens on an interstellar spacecraft. He has no memory of his mission or how he arrived there. The film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, stars Ryan Gosling. He is also a producer, alongside Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce. The adaptation has been praised for its faithful yet inventive take on Weir’s source material. Notably, it also became a bestseller following the success of The Martian.

Weir’s journey to Hollywood success followed an unconventional path. Before The Martian became a global phenomenon and later a Ridley Scott-directed film starring Matt Damon, Weir was a software engineer who self-published his work online. His unexpected entry into the traditional publishing industry came only after his blog posts gained a massive following, leading to a film adaptation that cemented his place in science fiction.
