Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a letter to India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, celebrating his remarkable 14-year international cricket career. Ashwin, widely recognized as one of India’s greatest match-winners, shocked everyone by announcing his retirement on December 18, following the draw in the Brisbane Test against Australia.
Ashwin’s international journey started in 2010 when he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. The following year, he played his first Test match against the West Indies. Across 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, he took a total of 765 wickets in all formats.

The Prime Minister said that Ashwin’s famous jersey number 99 would be “deeply missed” by teammates and supporters alike.
The Prime Minister praised Ashwin’s remarkable career in an emotional letter, highlighting his remarkable ability to outwit batsmen with his off-spin.
Modi also praised Ashwin’s commitment to the team, citing moments when he demonstrated his poise and resolve in the face of adversity.
“The announcement of your retirement from international cricket surprised fans in India and across the world. At a time when everyone was looking forward to many more off-breaks, you bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone,” PM Modi wrote.
“However, everyone understands that this must have been a hard decision for you as well, especially after the outstanding career you have had playing for India.”
