A main Pirates of the Caribbean star has revealed what would convince him to return. The franchise has released five blockbusters since 2003. However, it faced script issues, studio reboots, and controversies, thereby delaying the sixth installment.
Recently, Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Hector Barbossa in the franchise, provided his insights on the anticipated sixth movie. During a TIFF interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rush stated that he would return as Barbossa as long as the writing is not “too cheesy.” The actor said, “I don’t want it to be too cheesy and too easy that I come back and go ‘give me another payday.’ I respect the scale of the opera that’s almost being created in that 20-year period.”
Moreover, Rush also explained how he would like to return in the sixth installment. The 75-year-old star said, “I only liken it to… I’d go to Shakespeare, and you know, Hamlet’s father comes back as a ghost. And I thought that could be really big; it could take good writing, but just to come back and annoy Jack Sparrow for one more go.” Rush closed his comments by suggesting that the production should “get the fans to write it” based on what they would like to see.
Geoffrey Rush’s return would bring another familiar face back to the franchise
Rush’s recent comments about returning as Barbossa’s ghost also referenced the return of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. However, this would not be the first time the actor has made the suggestion; he previously stated that Depp is “irreplaceable” within the franchise.
Depp’s return as the iconic pirate was put on hold after his trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. In an effort to maintain “family-friendly” content, Disney dropped Depp from the sixth movie. After Depp’s departure from his hit franchise, he stated that he had felt betrayed and would never work with Disney again, even if they offered him “$300m and a million alpacas.”
In a recent interview at D23, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that they were in talks with Johnny Depp to convince him to reprise his role as Jack Sparrow. Bruckheimer said, “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”
Apart from these discussions, no further details about Depp’s potential return have been disclosed.
