Broadcaster Piers Morgan told BBC Question Time last night that Donald Trump has to achieve two goals before he will be deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The US president has long made it clear that he believes he should have already been nominated for the prestigious award, and claimed this week that he has “solved seven wars”.

While the US has been involved in five ceasefires or peace agreements this year, not all parties involved credit the States for that.

The White House previously claimed that Trump is including conflicts from his first term in office when he declares he has resolved “seven wars”, although it is unclear which disputes he is referring to.

But there are two wars which have occupied most of international attention over the last few years, and that’s Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza and Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Trump has so far failed to make any headway in resolving either, despite promising to and even calling himself a “war hero” over the Middle Eastern conflict.

Still, Piers Morgan told Question Time that ending these wars would make Trump deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

He said: “Donald Trump is fighting hard for peace. I don’t remember many Republican presidents in my lifetime who did that.”

Fellow panellist Bonnie Greer cut in then and said: “Tell that to the people of Gaza!”

“We happen to agree about what is happening in Israel,” Morgan replied, insisting that Trump “genuinely wants peace” in the Middle East and in Ukraine.

“He’s forging peace in other areas as much as he can,” he said. “He thinks they’re a waste of human life and a waste of money, and we should be doing fewer wars. I applaud that.

“And if Donald Trump can barrel his way through to get Putin and Netanyahu to finally do peace deals, in the Middle East and in Ukraine – and it’s not easy, they’re both behaving with barbaric impunity – but if he can, then damn right, he deserves a peace deal.”

“Does he deserve it now?” Greer asked.

“No! If he achieves those two things, absolutely he should get the Nobel Peace Prize,” Morgan said.

But a member of the audience called out the broadcaster by asking if he means Trump does not currently have the ability do something to help Ukraine and Gaza – despite having one of the largest militaries in the world.

She added: “Trump can do it. Trump is choosing not to.”

Morgan replied: “I do think he wants to forge peace, I do think he’s found it more difficult than he thought it would be, particularly with Ukraine.

“I do think he should be tougher on Putin.”

Trump repeatedly promised to end the war within his first 24 hours back in office, but has obviously missed that deadline by several months.

He has also suggested ending the war on terms more favourable to Putin – including forcing Ukraine to give up occupied land – but even that has not encouraged Russia towards peace.

Morgan also said that he believes there will most probably have to be a deal to end that war, alluding to how the Russian president is refusing to compromise.

He continued: “I particularly think what is happening in Gaza right now is utterly indefensible and that Donald Trump should pick up the phone to Netanyahu – or invite him to the White House – read him the riot act, and point out, that, yes, October 7 was a horrific, disgusting, attack on the Israeli people.

“But what has been going on this year is an indefensible overreaction to what happened.”
