Hollywood has never really been as idyllic and creatively fulfilling as you might expect when people throw around phrases like “the Golden Age of Hollywood,” if only because the people with money have always held an enormous amount of power over everything that happens. Still, it is true that there was a brief time when the entire movie business wasn’t owned by the same half-dozen companies that are just constantly cannibalizing each other. That’s exactly what’s happening these days, though, especially with rumors going around that Paramount (which just merged with Skydance) is going to try and acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, which would both create a gigantic media conglomerate (controlling Superman and DC Studios plus the Transformersmovies and Mission: Impossible) and almost certainly reduce the already-shrinking amount of competition in Hollywood.
