The Egyptian FA have confirmed that Omar Marmoush suffered a bruised knee ligament in the side’s goalless draw with Burkina Faso.

The Manchester City forward continued his run in the side having scored Egypt’s second in a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia last Friday, in which Mohamed Salah also netted.

But Marmoush was forced off just nine minutes into this evening’s World Cup qualifier away to Burkina Faso following a robust challenge at Ouagadougou’s Stade du 4 Aout.

The 26-year-old lay crumpled in a heap on the turf and was clearly in some discomfort as he hobbled off to be replaced by Osama Faisal.

Victory in the contest would have sealed Egypt a spot at next year’s tournament with two Group A games to play, but the Pharaohs came up short in search of an all-important winner.

The early injury to Marmoush just added to the visitors’ frustrations – and City head coach Pep Guardiola would no doubt have been wincing had he been watching on from Manchester.

‘Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Ela, the doctor of the Egyptian national team, confirmed that Omar Marmoush’s injury in today’s match against Burkina Faso in the eighth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was a bruised knee ligament,’ a statement on the Egyptian FA’s website read.

‘Marmoush left the match after being subjected to a violent tackle from one of the Burkina Faso players, and Osama Faisal participated in his place.’

A separate post on the Egyptian team’s official Instagram page read: ‘Omar Marmoush injured with a bruise in the knee ligaments.

There were videos of Marmoush smiling and giving a thumbs up to the camera in the immediate aftermath of the stalemate, giving City fans hope ahead of their clash with Manchester United this weekend.

However, the footage in question shows winger sporting a heavy bandage around his right knee.

Marmoush started on the bench for City’s opening match of the Premier League campaign at Wolves, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 win at Molineux.

But Guardiola has named Marmoush from the start for the club’s last two games against Tottenham and Brighton and the attacker will have been hopeful of continuing his run in Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Guardiola will be expected to provide an update on the nature and severity of Marmoush’s injury when he faces the media for his pre-match press conference later in the week.
