No punishment is coming for the Edmonton Oilers.

The NHL has closed the book on an investigation into Evander Kane‘s placement on long-term injured reserve last season, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told reporters on Tuesday.

Kane missed the entire regular season with abdominal and knee injuries, but he returned in time for Game 2 of the playoffs and went on to record six goals and six assists in 21 appearances.

Kane’s regular-season absence and placement on LTIR cleared his $5.125 cap hit from the Oilers’ books, allowing the team to bring in defenceman Jake Walman and forward Trent Frederic at the trade deadline.

Until last season, the salary cap ceased taking effect in the playoffs.

However, starting this season, a post-season cap will be implemented, closing a loophole that allowed teams like the Oilers and champion Florida Panthers to ice playoff rosters that sat above the salary ceiling.

The Oilers dealt Kane, who is entering the final year of his contract, to the Vancouver Canucks in June in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
