There has never been a player like Shohei Ohtani, and there might never be another.
The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar found another level on Tuesday and more history with another spectacular outing.
Ohtani started Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies on the mound and pitched five no-hit innings. Then, in the eighth inning, he took David Robertson deep for his 50th home run of the season.
The home run triggered multiple milestones for Ohtani:
• With five strikeouts on the mound Tuesday, Ohtani now has 54 punch-outs on the season. He is the first player ever to have 50 home runs and 50 strikeouts as a pitcher in the same season, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com. In fact, the only other player to have 50 home runs and any strikeouts as a pitcher was Babe Ruth, who had 59 home runs and three strikeouts in 1921.
• Ohtani is just the sixth player to have back-to-back 50 home run seasons and the first since Alex Rodriguez in 2001 and ’02.
• Ohtani is the first player to pitch five no-hit innings and have a home run in a game since Rick Wise in June of 1973, according to Sportsnet Stats. Wise was pitching for the Phillies that day, the same team Ohtani homered against on Tuesday.
The Dodgers went on to lose the game 9-6, but as with anything Ohtani does, fans on the internet had plenty to say about his latest incredible feats. Here are some of the many reactions.
