The 2026-27 NHL season is beginning to highlight the different defensive trajectories of two of the league’s most prominent young rosters. As of late October, the Buffalo Sabres have shown signs of consistency, while the Anaheim Ducks have struggled with late-game leads.
The Sabres entered their October 29 matchup against Anaheim with a 5-4-3 record and 13 points. Much of this stability stems from their ability to close out games, evidenced by a 2-0 shutout win over the San Jose Sharks on October 27. Despite the victory, Buffalo faces immediate personnel questions as rookie forward Konsta Helenius is currently undergoing evaluation for an upper-body injury sustained during that contest.
Defensive fragility has become a primary factor in the Ducks' declining championship projection.
In contrast, the Ducks (5-6-1, 11 points) have struggled with high-leverage volatility. A significant setback occurred during an October 27 game against the Vancouver Canucks; after holding a 5-2 lead late in the game, Anaheim surrendered four unanswered goals to lose 6-5 in overtime.
Contrasting Futures and Roster Moves
The current betting landscape for the 2027 Stanley Cup places both teams behind the league leaders, with the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes currently sitting as co-favorites at +650.
The Ducks are expected to welcome back forward Troy Terry in the coming days. Terry, who has been sidelined following hip surgery, is nearing his season debut and could provide the offensive cushion necessary for the lineup.
While Buffalo has managed to stay competitive through low-scoring affairs, the loss of Helenius could test their depth. The Sabres have avoided the type of late-game results seen in Anaheim, where the Ducks failed to secure points after holding a three-goal lead against Vancouver. Until the Ducks can stabilize their play in the third period, they face an uphill climb in the standings.
