The new The Amityville Horror movie being made for Amazon MGM Studios has found a director.
Based on the 1977 book by Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror franchise officially kicked off in 1979 with the Stuart Rosenberg-directed film starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. There have since been a number of sequels, remakes, and reboots, including the Ryan Reynolds-led 2005 movie and 2017’s Amityville: The Awakening with Bella Thorne and Mckenna Grace.
Who is directing the new The Amityville Horror movie?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, it has now been announced that David F. Sandberg will direct a new The Amityville Horror movie.
Sandberg made his feature film debut in 2016 with Lights Out. He then went on to direct 2017’s Annabelle: Creation, 2019’s Shazam!, 2023’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and, most recently, 2025’s Until Dawn.
Sandberg will produce the movie alongside Peter Safran and John Rickard. Natalia Safran and Lotta Losten serve as executive producers, while the script comes from Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. Goldberg and Naing recently worked on the script for Warner Bros. Studios and Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is now playing in United States theaters.
Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time. No casting has yet been announced.
A description of the 1979 movie reads, “Chiller about a family who are terrorised by supernatural forces when they move into a new house in New York State which was the scene of a recent mass killing and the home of an 18th-century satanist. When swarms of flies appear from nowhere and the pipes and walls begin to ooze slime and blood, they call on a local priest to exorcise the evil spirits.”
A release date for the new The Amityville Horror movie has not yet been announced by Amazon MGM Studios.
