After enjoying blockbuster success during its theatrical run, Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch continues to perform well with the audience since making its streaming debut on Disney+ nearly a week ago. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie was still able to garner a Popcornmeter score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lilo & Stitch breaks Disney+ streaming records

According to TheWrap, the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie has officially set new Disney+ records by becoming the streamer’s second biggest premiere for a Disney live-action movie. After its first five days, the movie has already scored 14.3 million views worldwide. In addition, the outlet also noted that the remake’s streaming debut also helped boost the viewership of the original animated movie and other Lilo & Stitch-related content, which totaled 670 million hours globally.

“This reimagination of a Disney animated classic brings new energy into the hilarious and heart-warming tale of Lilo and her unconventional adopted ‘pet’ Stitch. Lush tropical settings provide welcoming visuals as warm as the ‘found family’ that Lilo and Stitch create together, while also authentically honoring the culture and beauty of Hawai’i,” reads the synopsis.

The live-action movie was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp from a screenplay written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes. The ensemble cast includes Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch, Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba, Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai, Billy Magnussen as the voice of Pleakley, Sydney Agudong as Nani, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Kaipo Dudoit as David, Amy Hill as Tūtū, Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa, and Jason Scott Lee.

The adaptation was produced by Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Tom Peitzman, Ryan Halprin, Louie Provost, and Thomas Schumacher serving as executive producers. Following its massive box office success, the studio confirmed that a follow-up sequel is now in development, with Sanders attached to pen the screenplay.
