Netflix’s ‘unhinged’ new number 1 movie is the best it’s ever created

The Wrong Paris on Netflix might be the platform’s best romcom yet.

It’s plainly obvious to see why it’s currently Netflix’s number one most-streamed film at the moment – it’s flipping brilliant.

Focusing on Dawn (played by Miranda Cosgrove), The Wrong Paris follows a young woman who finds she has been accepted into a prestigious art school, but can’t attend because she spent all of her money on her grandmother’s hospital bills – how sweet.

The only way to resolve her financial issues is to take part in a TV show in Paris and secure the $20,000 appearance fee.

The reality show in question is The Honeypot – a version of The Bachelor, which ends in a Love Island-style question where the chosen woman is asked if they want the honey (the man) or the money ($250k).

Dawn has every plan to get booted out of the game immediately so she can secure her funds and just stay in Paris for her course but get this, the show has a twist and is set in Paris, Texas. Yes, not Paris, France, aka the City of Love. She then has to up the ante and try and get booted out as quickly as possible and make it to Paris for her course.

After getting to grips with the simple, cliche-filled plot, I was ready to settle down for some absolute tosh, but was completely taken aback by how good the film actually was.

The plot is, of course, flimsy and filled with all the best romcom storytelling devices. This includes unbelievably poor miscommunications, characters so bonkers they couldn’t possibly exist, and low stakes at every turn to keep the movie light and fun.

But that’s what makes it fabulous. It’s cheeky and silly, but with strong bones, such as likeable characters, a strong narrative structure, and an original script.

Leading man Pierson Fodé is very hot (with many gratuitous topless scenes) and had perfect chemistry with Miranda, truly selling this cheesy tale.

The script is also littered with hilarious one-liners and witty takes on romcom and reality TV tropes that genuinely had me laughing out loud.

I’m not alone in my opinion as fans online also agree that this is a perfectly ‘unhinged’ romcom.

‘This was genuinely the most unhinged and insane rom-com I’ve ever seen, and you should watch it immediately. Miranda Cosgrove you remain the people’s princess. #TheWrongParis,’ said kat__writes

‘ROMCOMS ARE SO BACK😭💖This movie literally feels like watch a reality show and their chem is SO GOOD. TheWrongParis,’ said cindypandiita.

‘Predictable, corny but super cute and a fun time #TheWrongParis,’ said InHollywoodland.

The film is absolutely not reinventing the wheel, but it hits all the best marks and might be one of Netflix’s best-ever romcoms.

Netflix’s romantic comedies are never typically this high in quality, looking at Falling Inn Love, A Perfect Pairing, Your Place or Mine or Love in the Villa, which lacked substance and anything memorable to stick in the brain after the 90-minute flick.

Those were the kind of films you can fall asleep to after a big roast on a Sunday, wake up half an hour later, and you’ve not missed much.

But the platform has also pulled out some big guns in the past. 2018’s Set it Up was an unexpected home run, and in the same year, the platform released the teen romcom To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which was another smash hit.

But it’s been a long, old wait since then. Somebody Great in 2019 was good, but bordered on drama; the same goes for Love at First Sight in 2023, which was too much of a tear-jerker to be a true romcom.

This might be Netflix’s greatest swing and a hit, and I implore people to give it a chance rather than fob it off as I nearly did.
