When Netflix’s newest true-crime documentary, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, reveals the true identity of the person who spent years tormenting teenagers Lauryn Licari and Owen McKenny, everyone is naturally shocked. Even those who are not particularly enjoying the movie have to admit that this is a plot twist for the books. After all, Lauryn and Owen’s cyberbully is none other than Lauryn’s own mother, Kendra Licari. Throughout Unknown Number, documentarian Skye Borgman gives Kendra plenty of room to explain herself, to tell her own side of the story, to talk about how she fought to uncover the identity of the person making her daughter’s life a living hell. Therefore, it is definitely more than a little weird when the viewer finds out that Kendra was the one behind the whole affair. Things get even stranger when considering the documentary itself and its approach to Kendra.
