Netflix‘s hit biographical crime drama anthology returns for a fourth season. Ella Beatty will play Monster Season 4’s murder of interest, Lizzie Borden.
In an interview with People, the actress discussed the responsibility that comes with playing a character like the infamous 19th-century figure. She said, “I felt a huge responsibility to the part, the character on the page, as well as the real person and the anthology, more generally. I, right away, felt like [it was] time to get to work, even before pre-production.”
In the fourth season of the anthology series, Borden was accused of killing her father and her stepmother with an axe, before being acquitted of any wrongdoing.
How Ella Beatty earned high praise from the Monster team
The search for the actress to play Lizzie Borden was reportedly a long one. However, the Monster team immediately knew Beatty was the correct choice even before she auditioned properly.
Ian Brennan, the show’s co-creator, stated how surreal it was to see the character in Ella Beatty immediately after she walked for an audition. He said, “There’s such a purity to her. She can achieve a real blank canvas to her, but also is incredibly sharp. [She is] very, very, very smart.”
He also later stated, praising her intuition regarding the role, “She’s got it going on. She’s just incredibly smart, really talented, and [has] amazing poise for somebody as young and who doesn’t have as much experience.”
Pacific Rim alum Charlie Hunnam is also part of the cast this season, and he praised the actress as well. He said, “There’s no difference between her and any of the most seasoned pros that I’ve worked with. She knows what she’s doing, and she does it very well.”
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story begins streaming on Netflix today.
