Major league players will be allowed to challenge ball and strike calls beginning in 2026.
MLB announced Tuesday that the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) has been approved to be used in major league games.
Under the rule, a pitcher, catcher or batter can challenge a call on a pitch by tapping his hat or helmet. Teams are allowed two challenges per game but will keep a challenge if it is successful. No assistance from the dugout or other players on the field is allowed, and teams will be given an additional challenge in extra innings.
