Were it not for Netflix, Breaking Bad wouldn't have become the cultural phenomenon that it did. Several network shows experienced what later came to be known as "the Netflix effect" after becoming available on the streamer. They reached a larger audience, which helped them stay afloat longer than they otherwise would have. The phenomenon was witnessed as recently as last month, when a sci-fi series that originally aired from 2014 to 2018 became available on Netflix in all its five-season glory. It immediately became the streamer's most-watched acquired series, topping the Nielsen charts with a whopping 1.2 billion minutes watched.
