In 1991, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse took viewers behind the scenes of one of the most troubled, difficult film productions of all time, as Francis Ford Coppola attempted to make one of his masterpieces, Apocalypse Now. The film, directed by Coppola’s wife, Eleanor Coppola, along with George Hickenlooper and Fax Bahr, became considered one of the best documentaries ever made. It is a fascinating glimpse at the artistic process, and the unbelievable journey Francis Ford Coppola went on to make this classic, which almost killed him, members of his cast, and could’ve destroyed his career. But in the end, Coppola gave us one of the most important and brilliant war films ever made.
