The four-episode miniseries expands on the zombie apocalypse first teased in What If…? Season 1 Episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, confirmed that episode as a prologue, stating, “It is very much like the part 1 prologue for this giant, epic event that is coming out next year” (via Entertainment Weekly).
The series is Marvel Studios Animation’s first TV-MA project, designed for adult viewers. Bryan Andrews emphasized that surprises remain hidden until release: “We hope that there are some surprises still left, so you can see the episode and go, ‘What?’” (via Collider). The plot follows a virus originating from the Quantum Realm that transforms Earth’s heroes into zombies, with survivors including Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, and Kate Bishop.
Confirmed cast members reprising their live-action roles include Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, and David Harbour as Red Guardian. Simu Liu returns as Shang-Chi, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Awkwafina as Katy, and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel.
Additionally, Randall Park voices Jimmy Woo; Dominique Thorne plays Riri Williams; Wyatt Russell appears as U.S. Agent; and Tessa Thompson returns as Valkyrie. Hudson Thames also reprises Spider-Man, while Todd Williams voices Blade.
Preview footage previously screened at a Disney event showed Shang-Chi, Wenwu, and Katy fighting zombies. The Ten Rings save Shang-Chi, though Wenwu is infected. A later time jump depicts Shang-Chi and Katy battling biker Skrulls in a wasteland setting. Executive producers include Zeb Wells, Bryan Andrews, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, Louis D’Esposito, and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt.
Marvel Zombies will release all four episodes at once on Disney+, allowing audiences to binge the series immediately.
