Marvel’s Wolverine just got a sharper upgrade on base PS5. The latest update for developer Insomniac Games’ latest Marvel title adds support for PlayStation‘s newly announced QSSR, alongside many fixes. These include bug fixes related to the UI, photo mode, accessibility options, and localization.
Marvel’s Wolverine launched earlier in September to mostly positive reviews. Like most titles from Insomniac Games, it launched with several graphical modes, targeting higher performance, improved ray tracing, and a balanced mode taking advantage of VRR displays. On PS5 Pro, it included Performance Pro and Fidelity Pro modes, along with a third mode for advanced ray tracing, all using PSSR upscaling.
What QSSR means for Marvel’s Wolverine players on PS5
QSSR, short for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is a new tier of AI upscaling built for the base PS5 console (via PlayStation Blog). It’s derived from the same technology that powers PSSR, exclusive to the PS5 Pro. QSSR is a result of PlayStation’s partnership with AMD under Project Amethyst. The technology gives better image quality and improved performance to existing PS5 games. In Marvel’s Wolverine, QSSR delivers better clarity for different environments and characters, which is especially helpful when viewed at a distance on a 4K display. It also cleans up aliasing at a distance, offering a sharper and improved image across all modes.
“Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players,” said Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games.
“QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey. It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5.”
Marvel’s Wolverine update v1.002.000 is now live for all PS5 players. QSSR is also being rolled out in Ghost of Yōtei, with more games getting updates later. QSSR needs to be toggled separately from the in-game menu after the update.
