A change to Deadpool‘s healing factor just made the Merc with a Mouth even more disturbing. Granted there is much about Wade Wilson that is horrifying, a recent revelation regarding his main superpower has pushed his healing factor beyond his appearance and his sense of humor on the list of “Most Terrifying Things About Wade Wilson.”

Marvel Just Made Deadpool's Healing Factor Far More Horrifying

The power change was revealed in Wade Wilson: Deadpool #6 by Benjamin Percy and Alex Lins. The story finds Wade going on the warpath after being attacked by a clone disguised as a pizza delivery driver. While this sort of thing is a typical Tuesday in the Marvel Universe, Wade still decides to investigate. This is largely due to the poor quality of the clone, which resembled “a Hot Pocket when I left it in the microwave too long.”

Deadpool backtracks his doppelganger’s steps into the sewers of Manhattan. However, he soon discovers that the clone was not alone. Indeed, there is an entire swarm of partial and imperfect clones of the Regenerating Degenerate. Moreover, these Badpools (as Wade dubs them) somehow believe that drinking his blood will somehow make them whole, or at least heal their pain.

After interrogating one of the smaller Badpools, Wade uncovers their horrifying origin. They are not the product of some failed experiment by the Jackal, Mister Sinister, or any of the other Marvel baddies who deal in cloning. The Badpools are all pieces of Wade severed from various battles who achieved sentience and began growing into even more twisted copies of Deadpool.

Why this Deadpool power is surprisingly logical

As disturbing and horrifying as this is, there is a twisted logic to it. Deadpool’s healing factor, while based on that of Wolverine, has an intentional side-effect introduced by Department H. Namely, it was altered to replace Wade’s body cells as quickly as his cancers can destroy them. This means that if Wade was ever cured, his healing factor would go out of control. This would eventually result in a painful death from overly-large growths forming all over Wade’s body. The cruel irony is that cancer cells spread and develop into tumors the same way.

Given that, it makes a twisted sense that Wade’s severed bits might retain his cancer and healing factor. Enough to at least try and “heal” Deadpool, with clearly mixed results. Just how this happened has yet to be explained. The one thing that is certain is that whoever is responsible will have more than one angry Deadpool to deal with shortly.

Wade Wilson: Deadpool #6 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
