A MAJOR motorway bridge has been forced to close, sparking “severe” delays for thousands of morning commuters.
Traffic is building on the M4 just before the Prince of Wales Bridge after an overnight diesel spillage caused chaos.
Emergency roadworks have began at the westbound J22 entry slip road after a breakdown caused the spill.
The incident has damaged the carriageway surface, leaving the road requiring resurfacing.
The motorway was closed westbound between junctions 21-23 as a result.
National Highways say it is to remain closed throughout the morning.
National Highways previously said: “The #M4 #PrinceofWalesBridge westbound is likely to slightly overrun its scheduled end time of 6am due to the breakdown and diesel spillage at the J22 westbound entry slip.
“We will advise as soon as the bridge reopens. The J22 westbound entry will remain closed this morning.”
