Mahershala Ali revealed that Marvel’s Blade delays cost him far more than just one superhero role. The actor explained how the studio’s repeated production pushbacks controlled his schedule and forced him to pass on multiple film opportunities.

Mahershala Ali recently revealed that Marvel’s repeated Blade delays forced him to turn down other film opportunities. Speaking on GQ’s One More Question podcast, the two-time Oscar winner explained how the studio controlled his schedule for years.

Ali first met with Marvel in 2019 about the Blade reboot. By that summer, the studio announced the project at San Diego Comic-Con. However, production never moved forward as planned. Ali described how he committed fully to the role despite the uncertainty. He trained intensely for a year, learning sword work and multiple martial arts. That preparation ultimately resulted in a serious knee injury.

The actor also uprooted his family and relocated to Atlanta for the shoot. Marvel kept pushing back the production timeline without delivering a start date. “They just keep pushing it back, pushing it back, pushing it,” Ali said. Then a Hollywood strike created further delays.

Ali confirmed that the Blade commitment cost him other projects during that period. “I’m saying no to things in that time because they own my schedule basically,” he told GQ. The interviewer noted that Ali completed only five films in eight years after Green Book. Ali acknowledged that number should have been higher. “That should have been six or seven. Blade didn’t happen,” he said.

The stalled project clearly impacted his career trajectory beyond just the MCU. Kevin Feige previously called the situation his biggest professional failure. Ali agreed with that assessment during the interview. However, the actor has firmly moved past the Blade chapter now.

Ali said getting official closure on the project freed him creatively. “Part of it was me getting past the whole Blade of it all,” he explained. He described himself as the hungriest he has been as an actor in a long time. “I’m hungry, bro. I’m hungry,” Ali said. He has since channeled his earlier combat training into Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother alongside director Bassam Tariq.
