Ireland captain Paul Stirling has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series against Namibia after sustaining a fractured finger. The injury comes at a critical juncture for the squad, which currently trails 2-1 in the five-match series in Windhoek.
Stirling sustained a broken ring finger on his left hand during the 15th over of the third ODI while diving for a low catch. Following medical assessment, the opening batter will return home for treatment, leaving Ireland to navigate a must-win scenario without their regular leader. Wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker will step in as captain for the final two matches.
To fill the vacancy in the squad, Cricket Ireland has called up Tim Tector as a replacement. He joins a side facing an uphill battle against a Namibian team that leads the five-match series 2-1.
Ireland trails the five-match series 2-1 heading into the final fixtures in Namibia.
Series Momentum and Challenges
The series has seen a significant shift in momentum since Ireland’s 55-run victory in the opening match. Namibia responded with a 31-run win in the second ODI and followed it with a 63-run victory in the third match. Although Curtis Campher struck a resilient 106 in the most recent defeat, Ireland’s middle order struggled to maintain the required run rate against the hosts’ disciplined bowling.
The squad faces further transition following the announcement that leg-spinner Ben White has retired from international cricket. White’s departure, confirmed on October 28, removes an experienced spin option from the attack as Ireland prepares for the series’ concluding fixtures.
The final matches of the tour are scheduled for October 30 and November 1. Both games will take place in Windhoek, where Ireland must win both to claim the series. Beyond the immediate results, the coaching staff will be monitoring Stirling’s recovery closely.
