Lili Reinhart’s Star Wars-Inspired Movie Is No. 1 on Prime Video

A bestselling romance novel just hit the screen. Lili Reinhart‘s movie adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s beloved book is now streaming on Prime Video. The adaptation brings the story’s academic setting and fake-dating premise to the screen. Reinhart and Tom Bateman lead the cast.

According to daily streaming data from FlixPatrol, The Love Hypothesis is currently No. 1 on Prime Video’s movie charts.

Directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up), the romantic comedy is based on Hazelwood’s 2021 novel, which has an unusual connection to Star Wars. Hazelwood originally wrote the story as alternate-universe fan fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren, a pairing commonly known as “Reylo,” before transforming it into an original romance.

The movie stars Reinhart as Olive Smith and Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen. Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White, and Arty Froushan round out the supporting cast.

Prime Video subscribers are flocking to The Love Hypothesis

The story follows Olive, a biology Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University focused on her research with little interest in romance. When her best friend Anh develops feelings for Olive’s former crush, Jeremy, Olive decides she needs to convince Anh she’s moved on.

Olive impulsively tries to prove that point and kisses the first man she sees in a hallway. She soon discovers that the stranger is Adam, a brilliant but notoriously difficult professor whose reputation has made him one of the most intimidating figures in the department.

Instead of making the situation awkward, Adam agrees to pretend they are dating. The arrangement works for both of them. Olive can convince Anh that she has moved on from Jeremy, while Adam can present a more approachable image as he works to secure university research funding.

As the fake relationship continues, the boundaries between the arrangement and their actual feelings begin to disappear.  

The film retains the “grumpy meets sunshine” dynamic that helped make Hazelwood’s novel popular, while bringing its characters and academic romance to a new audience through Prime Video.
