Larry David Gets Rejected by Barack Obama in Trailer for Hilarious New HBO Max TV Show

The creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David, is coming back with a new sketch comedy show. The first trailer for Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, is now out.

“President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called,” reads the show’s logline.

The series will spotlight many overlooked figures and absurd moments in U.S. history. Fittingly, the show’s debut lines up with the 250th anniversary of the United States, as the logline suggests, carrying the subtitle “An Almost History of America”.

What do we see in the trailer for Larry David’s new HBO Max TV show?

In one of the trailer’s hilarious moments, Larry asks former President Barack Obama if he can list him as his emergency contact, but Obama rejects him. Dejected, Larry wonders if Michelle Obama will accept his request. The teaser is, of course, breaking the fourth wall with Obama directly addressing the audience.

What makes this special is that Obama isn’t just a guest star, but also involved behind the scenes as a producer on the series. The show is written and executive produced by Larry David, with co-creator Jeff Schaffer also serving as director. Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Ethan Lewis, and Vinnie Malhotra serve as executive producers for Higher Ground.

HBO has also confirmed that, alongside David, several Curb Your Enthusiasm actors will appear in the series. Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness will be David’s highly anticipated return to TV following the 12-year run of Curb Your Enthusiasm, the entirety of which made it one of the funniest shows of all time. The series enjoyed 55 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning two.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness will be a seven-episode limited series and will debut on HBO on June 26, 2026. The show will be available to stream on HBO Max.
