Keir Starmer has warned X owner Elon Musk he is ready to crack down on the app’s “disgusting and shameful” AI tool Grok.

The prime minister hit out after Ofcom announced it was launching an investigation after the bot allowed users to generate sexualised images of women and children.

Culture secretary Liz Kendall told MPs on Monday that the government will act to make it illegal for tech companies to supply so-called “nudification” tools.

In response to the row last week, X announced that the service would only be available to those who pay to subscribe to the app.

But addressing Labour MPs and peers in parliament, Starmer said the social media platform had not gone far enough – and said the government was ready to act “fast” to tackle the problem.

He said: “The actions of Grok and X are absolutely disgusting and shameful. Protecting their abusive users, rather than the women and children who are being abused shows a total distortion of priorities.

“So let me be crystal clear, we won’t stand for it, because no matter how unstable or complex the world becomes, this government will be guided by its values. We’ll stand up for the vulnerable against the powerful.

“If X cannot control Grok, we will - and we’ll do it fast because if you profit from harm and abuse, you lose the right to self regulate.”

The government has also refused to rule out banning X altogether in the UK unless it cleans up its act.

But Musk  – who has regularly clashed with Starmer since he became PM – has accused the government of wanting to “suppress free speech”.
