Karl Vilips carded a career-best 9-under-par 62 on Thursday to take the opening-round lead at the VidantaWorld Mexico Open. Despite battling a persistent head cold and congestion that has affected him for several days, the Australian used two significant birdie streaks to edge ahead of the field at Vidanta Vallarta.
Vilips’ round was defined by a pair of prolific runs. After starting on the back nine, Vilips birdied five consecutive holes from Nos. 11 through 15. Following a mid-round lull, he closed his day with four straight birdies on holes 6, 7, 8, and 9 to secure the solo lead. The 62 marks his lowest single-round score on the PGA Tour to date.
Vilips recorded nine birdies during his first round in Mexico.
The performance comes at a critical juncture for Karl Vilips, who entered the week ranked 141st in the FedExCup Fall standings. While Vilips is already exempt on tour through 2027 following his victory at the Puerto Rico Open earlier this season, he is currently fighting to move into the “Next 10.” This group, consisting of players ranked 51-60 in the final standings, earns entry into the first two signature events of the 2027 season. A victory this week is projected to move him as high as 67th in the standings.
Field Conditions and Leaderboard
Players at Vidanta Vallarta utilized “preferred lies” during the opening round, a rule allowing golfers to lift, clean, and place their balls in closely mown areas. Vilips credited this accommodation for allowing a more aggressive approach into the greens on the 7,337-yard, par-71 layout.
Kensei Hirata of Japan sits in second place, just one stroke back after an 8-under 63. Ben Griffin is part of a group tied for third at 7-under 64. For Griffin, Thursday marked his first full 18-hole competitive walk since the BMW Championship, as he has been undergoing treatment for a knee injury during the off-weeks.
The Australian golfer used two distinct birdie streaks to secure a one-stroke lead.
Vilips will look to maintain his momentum early Friday morning. Analysis of the current standings suggests that maintaining a high position through the weekend will be essential for Vilips to bridge the gap toward the top 125, which remains the primary benchmark for full tour status for those not otherwise exempt.
