Jimmy Kimmel Live Return Date Set, Disney Issues Statement

Jimmy Kimmel is returning to ABC.

Last week, ABC halted production on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the FCC openly threatened to take action against the network and its license following Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s death. This sparked much controversy and debate, with many Hollywood organizations and figures criticizing this as the Trump Administration attacking free speech.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, ABC, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company, and Kimmel have come to an agreement, as Jimmy Kimmel Live! is returning to broadcast on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

What did Disney say in the statement about Jimmy Kimmel?

The Walt Disney Company said in a statement, “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.  We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s article notes that it’s not yet clear if the show will be broadcast across the entire country.

“[Affiliate group] Sinclair, for its part, had said that it would not go back to running Kimmel’s show on its stations until the late night host apologized for his comments, met with Sinclair representatives, and made a donation to Turning Point, the organization that Kirk founded,” the article states. “Sinclair, it should be noted, owns the ABC station in the Washington D.C. metro area, among other markets. Nexstar, similarly, could also choose to continue to preempt the show, though of course it would still be accessible online across the country after it runs on ABC.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kimmel’s contract with ABC ends next year. “Whether the suspension by ABC means that he is more likely to exit, or double down and stay with the company, remains to be seen,” the article notes.
