Jeff Probst recently told The New York Times that “nothing has changed” on Survivor regarding the show’s diversity approach. This comes despite Paramount rolling back its DEI policies after Donald Trump returned to the White House. The host and showrunner called CBS’s 2020 DEI initiative “one of the biggest positive changes ever.”

CBS introduced the initiative after the Black Lives Matter movement, mandating that unscripted shows cast a minimum of 50 percent people of color. Paramount later stepped back from these policies alongside several other entertainment companies during the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on DEI programs. Skydance similarly pledged to remove all DEI initiatives as it pursued FCC approval for its merger with Paramount.

Probst emphasized the show’s commitment to diverse casting in his interview. “If you watch our show, you know that we’re so diverse — and it’s not just skin color or ethnicity,” he said. He added that the show’s stories are “so much more interesting now because we have people from completely different walks of life.”

The Emmy winner stressed that no external pressure drives the casting decisions. “No one ever says, can you count the numbers again?” Probst told the Times. He credited casting director Jesse Tannenbaum for maintaining diversity as a narrative priority. “We need diversity. It’s for narrative,” Probst explained. He noted that differences among contestants create more compelling stories when players must cooperate while scheming against each other.

Survivor returned for its 51st season last Wednesday on CBS. Probst previously told The Hollywood Reporter he felt “enormous pressure” following the milestone 50th season. He described how that pressure led to the concept of the “Open Era.” The host said the team wanted “something new to really birth us into the next decade.”
