Jason Momoa Exits Highly Anticipated Video Game Movie, Replacement Found

A popular face has replaced Jason Momoa in a highly anticipated sci-fi video game movie. The live-action adaptation is based on Sony‘s blockbuster third-person shooter Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios.

The Helldivers movie was supposed to feature Momoa in a crucial role. However, the actor left the project in early June. Now, his role will be played by Reacher star Alan Ritchson, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

From PlayStation Productions, the Helldivers movie will be based on the 2015 first installment and its 2024 sequel, which went on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide.

What has Jason Momoa starred in recently?

Jason Momoa was most recently seen in the Supergirl movie, led by Milly Alcock in the titular role. The DCU entry saw Momoa playing Lobo.

The film was a box-office disaster, however, as it made only $126.3 million globally against a reported budget of $170 million. It also failed to impress most of the critics, earning an average Tomatometer score of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Surprisingly, Supergirl managed a solid streaming debut despite being a box-office bomb. It recently reached the top spot on HBO Max’s top 10 movies in the United States.

As for Momoa’s other projects, he was also seen in the 2026 action-comedy movie The Wrecking Crew. The story revolved around two estranged half-brothers, Jonny, played by Momoa, and James, played by Dave Bautista. They are forced to reunite after their father’s mysterious death. When they try to find the truth, many buried secrets surface, testing their loyalties.

Helmed by Angel Manuel Soto, The Wrecking Crew received solid reviews. Currently, it holds a Tomatometer score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its ensemble cast also featured Morena Baccarin, Jacob Batalon, Lydia Peckham, Roimata Fox, Claes Bang, Maia Kealoha, Temuera Morrison, and Frankie Adams, among others.
