Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about why she’s not in One Piece. The actress, who has openly expressed her admiration for the franchise, recently explained the circumstances that prevented her involvement.

Jamie Lee Curtis explains why she didn’t play Dr. Kureha in One Piece Season 2

In an interview with ScreenRant, Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about why she did not join Season 2 of One Piece in the role of Dr. Kureha. Addressing the speculation, the actress confirmed that the decision was not creative but purely due to scheduling limitations.

Curtis, who described herself as a long-time fan of the franchise, said she was unable to participate due to a scheduling overlap with another project. The production for the Netflix series was based in South Africa and the timing did not allow her to travel. “I’m a legit fan, like a serious OG fan, with the American dubs back in the day. And the only reason I didn’t get to do it was because it was in South Africa and I was shooting something else, and I couldn’t go to South Africa,” she said.

Curtis also added that she would have been open to the role had the circumstances been different. She noted, “If it had been Los Angeles or any place nearer, I would have absolutely been able to be in it.”

The role of Dr. Kureha, a tough and experienced doctor from Drum Island, was ultimately portrayed by Katey Sagal. Curtis expressed her approval of the casting, praising Sagal’s performance in the series. “But I’m so thrilled Katey did it and it is fantastic. It is just the greatest adaptation of an anime and a manga into live-action,” she said.

The live-action adaptation of One Piece, based on the long-running manga by Eiichiro Oda, debuted on Netflix in 2023. The series has recorded strong global viewership and continues to expand its reach. Season 2 was released on March 10, 2026 and Netflix has already renewed the series for a third season.
