James May is parting ways with a significant piece of television history as the era of the iconic motoring trio comes to a close. His 1974 Triumph Stag MkII, famously driven through Zimbabwe in the series finale of The Grand Tour, “One for the Road,” is currently up for auction.

The sale marks a final handover for the vehicle that carried May through the conclusion of his 22-year on-screen partnership with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. The car is being offered on the Collecting Cars auction platform, with bidding scheduled to conclude on October 29, 2026.

Restoration by The Smallest Cog

Following the grueling trek across the African landscape, the Stag underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to address the wear and tear of production. May enlisted the help of Richard Hammond’s restoration business, The Smallest Cog, to return the vehicle to its factory-specification appearance.

According to reporting from the Oxford Mail, the workshop performed a professional respray, returning the car to its original, vibrant Magenta shade. To ensure the new owner can maintain the finish, the sale includes a quantity of touch-up paint from the exact batch used during the workshop’s refurbishment.

The vehicle’s odometer currently indicates 83,368 miles. However, as is common with classic cars of this vintage and television history, the total mileage is not warranted.

The End of an Era

The auction of the Triumph Stag coincides with a broader divestment of vehicles used in the Zimbabwe special. Jeremy Clarkson is also reportedly auctioning his 1982 Lancia Montecarlo Spider, which featured alongside May’s Triumph in the finale.

For fans and collectors, the auction is scheduled to conclude on October 29, 2026. The vehicle represents one of the final three cars chosen by the presenters for their last adventure together, making it a primary artifact from the conclusion of modern motoring’s most recognizable television franchise.
