James Gunn’s Cult Classic Video Game Is Finally Becoming a Movie

James Gunn’s cult classic video game, which he co-wrote, is finally getting a live-action movie adaptation. Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, the action-adventure title was originally released in 2012.

Lollipop Chainsaw, the zombie game featuring popular female protagonist Juliet Starling, is turning into a movie, reports Deadline. Notably, the original installment was written by Masahiro Yuki and James Gunn before he entered the MCU with his hit movie Guardians of the Galaxy.

While the game remains one of Gunn’s best-known early gaming projects, neither Gunn nor Suda51 is attached to the upcoming film.

According to the latest report, the Lollipop Chainsaw’s creators want to establish “a new model for building globally recognized entertainment franchises from Asia.” The upcoming movie is expected to be an R-rated comedy. It will see the San Romero High School cheerleader Juliet hunting down zombies to save her friends, family, and boyfriend Nick Carlyle.

Live-Action movie marks the next chapter for Lollipop Chainsaw

The big announcement for a live-action Lollipop Chainsaw movie comes soon after the next major game was revealed in the hack-and-slash zombie franchise.

Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back, the new game, was showcased at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show last week. Developed by JP Universe and published by Dragami Games and Nada Holdings, it will arrive at some point in 2027.

Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back has Hajime Tabata as the director, who has previously helmed Final Fantasy XV. Original game’s co-producer and co-writer Masahiro Yuki is also part of the team.

The official description for the sequel reads, “Juliet returns, in a brand-new outfit and with even more power, to a rebuilt San Romero, now transformed into ‘Jaredwood,’ a sprawling metropolis built around the film industry. When a mysterious director traps her inside his twisted zombie movie, Juliet must fight alongside her allies, uncover the conspiracy behind the chaos, and stop a new threat posed by the Corrupted Realm zombies.”
