A British journalist in the United States has spoken about his fears for his own safety following the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Mehdi Hasan, a former HuffPost UK political editor, said “it is a very scary time” to be living in America.
Conservative activist Kirk was was shot and killed while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, leaving behind a wife and two young children.
Investigators have released a video showing the suspect in the murder jumping from a rooftop and fleeing immediately after the shooting.
Donald Trump has blamed the shooting on the “radical left,” claiming that people who described Kirk as a Nazi are “directly responsible” for his death.
On BBC 2′s Newsnight on Thursday, Hasan, an outspoken commentator on the left of politics, was asked if he was “more fearful for his own safety” in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death.
He said: “Unfortunately, yes. I’ve been inundated over the past 24 hours from friends and colleagues asking ‘what are you doing, are you getting more security in public’.
“Sadly, tragically, horrifically, Kirk was shot by a sniper apparently from way away, so even his own security team couldn’t protect him.
“It is very worry for public figures ... it’s insane, this country really needs to take a long, hard look at the level of gun violence and political violence, and it is a very very scary time at a time when people are ratcheting up and up and up.”
