As the nights lengthen, and Halloween beckons, interest in spiritual contact rises.
This time of year has historically always been seen as a phase where the veil between the living and dead, between ours and the spirit world, thins… and messages (or even spectres) slip through.
There’s something about the gathering darkness and the pause before winter that turns us inward, attuning us to subtle signals and intuitive whispers we might otherwise miss.
And if you want to tap into these messages, tarot can help you to connect with your spirit guides, ancestors, or passed-on loved ones.

My Witch’s New Year Halloween reading, available here, can reveal all.
Tarot has always been a tool not only for prediction but also for communication — a visual, and therefore projective, language that bridges conscious thought and unseen guidance.
At this time of year, you might find your cards ‘speak’ more clearly, or that images leap out at you with unusual intensity.
Here are three simple but powerful spreads you can try this season:
Spirit guide message spread (three cards)
First card: Who is drawing close to me now? Second card: What message do they bring? Third card: How can I best honour or act on their guidance? This spread is ideal if you’ve felt a nudge or synchronicity lately and want to understand where it’s coming from.

All the tarot cards can also provide clues as to who is in touch through their astrological links. So, Coins cards are Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Swords are Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Wands are Fire signs (Leo, Aries, Sagittarius), and Cups are Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).
Major arcana cards can be used as personality descriptions, or look up the planetary association of each card and use that to match that to a star sign — for example, The Magician is Mercury which rules Gemini and Virgo.
Ancestor connection spread (four cards)
First card: What trait or gift have I inherited from my blood line? Second card: What ancestral wound or pattern am I ready to heal? Third card: What wisdom do my ancestors offer me now? Fourth card: How can I keep their memory and teachings alive?Working with ancestors is about more than looking back — it’s about recognising how much of them lives in you today.

Behind each and every one of us stands a long line of ancestors. We are their living embodiment on Earth now and they just want us to survive and thrive. Feel their goodwill, support, and strength.
This spread can be particularly meaningful around family anniversaries or during rituals of remembrance.
Loved one in spirit spread (five cards)
First card: How are they showing their presence to me now? Second card: What do they most want me to know? Third card: How can I feel more connected to them? Fourth card: What healing do I still need around their passing? Fifth card: What blessing are they sending me for the path ahead?Use this spread if you feel your loved one has been sending signs recently (their favourite song playing, seeing a meaningful bird fly past your window, or noticing their name unexpectedly). These synchronicities are part of their message.
After your reading, set aside time to light a candle, and sit in quiet reflection. Keep a journal to record impressions, dreams or symbols that arise.
Using your tarot cards doesn’t necessarily ‘summon’ spirits – this is not a séance. It simply opens a channel for you to notice the guidance and connection in your realm.
