Is James Gunn Secretly Setting Up This Legendary Comic Crossover in the DCU?

James Gunn and other filmmakers and actors involved with the DC Universe have repeatedly emphasized that new projects from the franchise will rarely, if ever, require viewers to have seen or have knowledge of prior installments in order to understand key story or plot details. That being said, the franchise also, like the comics it’s based on, is going to feature longer-term storylines that connect multiple projects. This has already been made clear, as the second season of Peacemaker is explicitly influenced by the events of the film Superman. Gunn himself has teased how the upcoming HBO series Lanterns will introduce an aspect of an overarching storyline bridging multiple projects. Given all this, most fans are expecting the franchise to feature at least one major crossover project like those found in the comics and MCU, possibly as a culmination of the first multi-year “Chapter” of the DCU, Gods and Monsters, as well as any that may come sooner or later.
