The star-studded cast of The Odyssey has condensed Homer’s ancient epic into a rapid-fire one-minute recap. The performance comes just as Christopher Nolan’s 172-minute adaptation finally hits cinemas in some regions.

With The Odyssey officially releasing in theaters in some countries, viewers who have been anxiously awaiting the big-screen spectacle can now get a lightning-quick primer. The cast gave their whirlwind retelling in the form of a ballad, with their words strung together over a beat, during a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The unusual performance saw the A-list ensemble break down the complex narrative at breakneck speed. Rather than a standard recap, the cast opted for a rhythmic, almost rap-like delivery that races through Odysseus’s decade-long struggle to return to Ithaca. The recap touches on his key encounters with mythical beings, the travel, the fights, and struggles, all packed tightly into sixty seconds.

This theatrical promotional push dominated The Tonight Show throughout the week. Tom Holland, who plays Telemachus, kicked things off as the Monday night guest on July 13. Matt Damon, portraying the wandering king Odysseus, followed on Tuesday. Zendaya, who takes on the role of the goddess Athena, appeared on Wednesday, while Lupita Nyong’o is scheduled to make an appearance on Thursday. Nyong’o notably pulls double duty in the film, playing both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

The promotional tour does not stop there. Rapper Travis Scott, cast as the bard Demodocus, is scheduled to visit the show on July 21. John Leguizamo, who plays the loyal swineherd Eumaeus, will appear the following night. Director Christopher Nolan himself closes out the late-night residency on July 23.

Nolan’s adaptation is an epic fantasy action film shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm film cameras. The Odyssey chronicles Odysseus’ perilous voyage home after the Trojan War and his desperate attempt to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway. The sprawling ensemble also features Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.

Audiences can judge the full 172-minute journey for themselves when the film opens in the United States on July 17.
