Deadline reported that Jimmy Tatro officially closed his deal to play Gorilla Grodd in DC Studios’ Jimmy Olsen series for HBO Max. The American Vandal star reportedly entered talks for the role earlier this month. Notably, HBO has yet to officially greenlight the series despite the casting reports.

Fans on social media responded positively to the announcement. One user called Tatro “the exact fit for this role as Gorilla Grodd.” Another user expressed excitement by simply claiming ownership of the casting, writing, “That’s my gorilla Grodd.”

The series takes the form of a true-crime docuseries hosted by Jimmy Olsen. Skyler Gisondo played the character in Superman and will reportedly reprise the role. American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will be writing and showrunning the project.

Several fans highlighted Tatro’s career trajectory as a reason for excitement. One user praised his journey, writing, “This is gonna be special from frat boy YouTube skits to DC projects Jimmy won.” Another user acknowledged the unusual nature of the casting but remained optimistic. That fan wrote that the announcement “sounds fun” but also called it “one of the most absurd casting announcements.”

Tatro currently promotes The Hawk, a Will Ferrell Netflix golf comedy. He also stars in the upcoming Nicholas Stoller-directed film Judgment Day alongside Ferrell. His recent credits include Scream 7 and You’re Cordially Invited.

However, not every fan agreed on the casting choice for Grodd’s voice. One user suggested Arnold Schwarzenegger as an alternative pick for the character’s natural voice. James Gunn and Peter Safran executive produce the series.

Reports place the production shoot in Atlanta from late August through October, though HBO still has not given the official green light (via Cosmic Book).
