One of the biggest names in TV was forced to miss the Emmys on Sunday night after unexpectedly coming down with an infection.

Sofia Vergara, 53, is one of the best-paid stars on TV and has been nominated for five Emmys in the past, but had to miss the 77th annual event.

The Modern Family actress, who has also received five Golden Globes nominations, most recently appeared as Griselda Blanco in the Netflix crime series Griselda.

She was all set to host a portion of the Emmys show on Sunday, alongside Sydney Sweeney and Stephen Colbert, but a grisly allergic reaction saw her needing to trade her ball gown for a hospital gown.

The America’s Got Talent judge took to Instagram to explain why she was absent on the big night, sharing a picture of her grim ordeal with her 35.7million followers.

‘Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER! Sorry I had to cancel! Craziest eye allergy right before getting in the car!’ she explained in the caption.

The first image in the gallery was an up-close shot of Sofia’s face, which showed that her left eye had become reddened and swollen, with the actress struggling to open it fully.

Users who swiped left were then treated to a video of the Colombian-American star lying prone on a hospital bed while waiting for test results to come back.

And a third clip showed Sofia washing her eyes out, presumably on doctors’ orders, in order to combat the allergic reaction which had prevented her from attending the Emmys.

In the comments, some fans speculated over what might have caused the allergic reaction, while others wondered if it may have been conjunctivitis instead.

It’s not yet known whether Sofia will be compensated for missing the big night on Sunday by being allowed to present at the 2026 Emmys.

Regardless, whatever it was prevented Sofia from attending on the night that British actors made history at one of the biggest nights in American TV.

Adolescence stars Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper both took home major awards, with Owen becoming the youngest male actor winner in Emmy history.

The 15-year-old star was just 14 when he filmed the Netflix megahit from earlier this year, which followed a police investigation into the murder of a young girl.

He took home the supporting actor in a limited or anthology series prize on Sunday night in a competitive category that featured his Adolescence co-star Ashley Walters and James Bond star Javier Bardem, among others.

He said on stage at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater during Sunday’s ceremony: ‘Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, never mind here.

‘But I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. I was nothing about three years ago, and I’m here now.’
