There are plenty of contenders for the crown of modern great in the fantasy genre, but one that's pretty much nailed on for many is The Wheel of Time series from author Robert Jordan. Though it falls just short of absolute behemoths like Game of Thrones, with around 90 million copies sold, it really is probably the best example of an original series that we've had since the halcyon days of Tolkien.
