For almost half a century, one of the biggest names in science fiction has been battling to gain recognition in the West, at least to the same extent as in Japan. It's a franchise that's given us giant robots, brutal wars, space colonies, betrayals, deaths, you name it, in a bid to prove that it was more than just a cartoon about big machines hitting each other. Now, Netflix is taking one of its biggest swings yet to try to bring it into the wider public eye in North America.
