Superman director James Gunn opened up about his decision to change Bloodsport’s costume design in The Suicide Squad. The 2021 movie served as the filmmaker’s first DC movie before taking over DC Studios.
What did James Gunn say about Bloodsport’s suit change?
On Threads, when a fan asked why Idris Elba’s Bloodsport costume in The Suicide Squad was different from the original concept art, Gunn explained that he actually didn’t like the concept art’s design as much as the one that was featured in the movie. Elba’s Bloodsport costume was a tactical suit equipped to hold his nanotech-based weapons. He was also seen wearing a xenomorph-inspired helmet.

This comes after Gunn recently expressed his interest in bringing back Elba’s character into the DC Universe. He confirmed that he’s “always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out,” the filmmaker said in a previous interview. “So we’ll see what happens.”
The Suicide Squad was written and directed by Gunn. It centered around a group of supervillains tasked by Amanda Waller for a super-secret mission. The star-studded ensemble cast featured Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland, Tinashe Kajese, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Agee, Taika Waititi, and more. Despite its poor box office performance, the 2021 movie was still a hit among critics with a current Tomatometer rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. This served as Gunn’s first DC movie before becoming the co-CEO of DC Studios.
