The highly anticipated House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere featured a shocking incest scene. The first episode of the HBO Max fantasy drama’s latest chapter featured a twisted family moment, to say the least.

In the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 3, there’s a sequence where Prince Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell, ends up kissing his mother, Dowager-Queen Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke.

While the first episode was full of intense bloodshed and action set pieces from the Battle of the Gullet, the incest scene stood out due to its unexpected nature. During an interaction with Entertainment Weekly, Mitchell shared his thoughts on why Aemond kisses his mother. “In Aemond’s head, it’s like he’s assuming control of the family,” he said. “I always think of Ray Winstone from Scum [the 1979 British prison drama from director Alan Clarke].”

“It’s like, ‘I’m the daddy now.’ He’s the new leader. I think it leaves the question of, ‘What is the relationship gonna be with Alicent going forward?'”

Mitchell revealed he knew such an instance would occur because of “everything that I’ve explored with Aemond and his relationship with Alicent.”

Interestingly, it’s not the first time such a surprising moment has occurred among the Targaryens. During Season 1 of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra married her uncle Daemon. There was another instance where Aegon married his own sister, Helaena.
