Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse arrived on October 15, 2026, marking the first mainline-style 2D entry in the franchise in 18 years. Developed by Konami in partnership with Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, the title introduces a progression system centered on “Works of Mercy.”

One of the earliest challenges players encounter is the Holy Cross’ Work of Mercy #1, which requires killing 10 enemies using a specific whip attack. Mastering this mechanic is essential for upgrading the early-game kit for protagonist Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades.

Executing the Arcane Whip Attack

Unlike the standard whip strikes found in previous Castlevania titles, the whip attack in Belmont’s Curse relies on a two-step “grab and strike” motion. While the game features a fixed Metroidvania map rather than roguelike elements, the combat requires precise timing similar to modern action titles.

To perform the whip attack on PlayStation 5:

Grab: Press and hold R2 to latch onto an enemy with the Arcane Whip. This pulls Rose toward the target. Strike: Press Square just before Rose reaches the enemy.

A successful execution is signaled by a distinct visual cue: the game world will briefly enter a “time-slow” effect for approximately one second. This confirms the hit has registered toward the Work of Mercy requirement. On Xbox Series X/S or PC, players should use the equivalent triggers and primary attack buttons to initiate the grab and follow-up strike.

The Holy Cross’ Work of Mercy Reward

The “Works of Mercy” serve as the primary progression system in Belmont’s Curse, replacing traditional sub-weapon upgrades with an “Arcana” spell system. Completing the first task for the Holy Cross—killing 10 enemies with the whip attack—provides a significant boost to Rose’s ranged capabilities.

Upon completing the tenth kill, the player is rewarded with the ability to throw a second cross simultaneously. This double-cross upgrade allows for better zone control and higher damage output against the game’s early bosses.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s Arcane Whip mechanics represent a departure from the classic swinging seen in titles like Super Castlevania IV, focusing instead on mobility and momentum-based strikes to navigate its interconnected world.
