House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower in HBO‘s Game of Thrones spin-off series, slams the film and television industry for labeling women “difficult” when they set boundaries during sex scenes.
What did Olivia Cooke say about the industry’s treatment of women during sex scenes?
In an interview with The i Paper while promoting her upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, The Girlfriend, Cooke stressed that women are often labeled “difficult” on set simply by setting some boundaries during “really precarious and vulnerable situations.”
“[The inevitable embarrassment is amplified for] those who are just starting out and don’t have the vocabulary to say what they’re not comfortable with. And for women, who’ll often get labelled ‘difficult’ or ‘a b**ch’ for speaking up, [a good intimacy coordinator will] sense hesitation and become your voice,” said Cooke.
She also stated that while “showing intimacy, passion is an integral part of reflecting the human experience,” sex scenes can be done without actresses feeling like “a chunk of yourself has been taken.”
The Girlfriend director Robin Wright, who also stars in the series alongside Cooke, also took time to appreciate the show’s intimacy coordinators, saying, “It’s amazing to me that people had to just fudge their way through those scenes before those people existed.”
In The Girlfriend, based on Michelle Frances’ 2018 debut novel of the same name, Wright stars as Laura, a woman who has it all: a successful career and a kind and talented son, Danny (Laurie Davidson). However, her life takes an unexpected turn when her son brings his girlfriend Cherry (Cooke) home, whom she suspects is only after Danny’s wealth.
The series also stars Waleed Zuaiter, Anna Chancellor, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, and more.
The Girlfriend premieres on Prime Video on September 10.
