An actor has spoken openly about his experience on X2, describing a workplace environment that left lasting scars on its cast. The actor’s remarks come as he prepares to return as Nightcrawler in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, a film he says has finally allowed him to replace difficult memories with something positive.
Alan Cumming recounts his time working on X2
Speaking to Deadline, Cumming detailed conditions on the 2003 set that he found unacceptable. “There were things that happened on the [X2] set that were just shocking to me,” he said. “The working environment was very, very wrong and very just unacceptable. And we all have talked about it in various ways over the years.”
Though Cumming did not name director Bryan Singer directly, the context aligns with widely documented reports from that time. During production, cast members allegedly threatened a walkout due to Singer’s behaviour on set. The director has faced multiple allegations of misconduct across his career, though he has consistently denied wrongdoing.
The shared distress of filming X2 forged an enduring connection among its stars. Cumming told People last month that he remains in regular contact with several co-stars, attributing those bonds directly to the trauma they endured together. “It’s one of those films where I think we all were so traumatized we were bonded in trauma, so we stayed in touch,” he explained. He named Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Patrick Stewart, and James Marsden as colleagues he has seen frequently over the intervening two decades.
Now, the Avengers: Doomsday production has been a better change in the MCU. Alan Cumming described the experience as a meaningful opportunity to reclaim a character he had always valued. “Going back to it after all these years was great because I really liked the character,” he told Deadline. “To go back and play him now and also this film is like superhero soup. There’s so many of them in it. I just can’t keep up.”
Avengers: Doomsday is releasing on 18 December 2026.
